Table Planning & Sizing Guide
Plan the Table Around People, Not Just Inches
Start With Use, Then Size
A table can technically fit inside a room and still feel too large. It can also be long enough for eight chairs but seat fewer people comfortably because the base occupies the wrong space.
Seating estimates are starting points, not guarantees. Chair width, end seating, pedestal position and desired personal space all affect real capacity.
As a broad reference, 48β60 inches may suit four people, 60β72 six, 78β96 eight, 96β120 ten, and 120 inches or more may be considered for twelve or larger gatherings.

Width and Room Clearance
Many dining tables fall around 36β42 inches wide, but the best width depends on the room and how the center of the table will be used.
A narrower top can preserve circulation. A wider top creates more space for serving dishes and centerpieces but increases the distance between people seated opposite one another.
Measure with chairs in mind: pulling them out, sitting down, walking behind occupied seats and opening nearby doors or cabinets.
Height and Base Placement
Dining height, counter height and other custom heights require different chair or stool proportions. Confirm the seating you plan to use before finalizing an unusual height.
The base is both structural and functional. Legs or pedestals determine where chairs fit and whether end seats are comfortable.
For long dining or conference tables, review the seating plan and support placement together rather than selecting them independently.
Visual Scale and Delivery
Dark walnut with black resin can make a large table feel visually substantial. Clear resin can create a lighter sense of negative space. Highly figured wood can make even a smaller top feel like a statement.
Finish and edge profile also affect perceived thickness. A bevel can visually reduce mass, while a square edge emphasizes it.
Before approving a very large size, measure doors, hallways, stairs, elevators, basement access, window openings, ceiling clearance and tight turns.
